well said, and of course some of the punky mid-'60s bands used cheezy organs as well - Farfisas and Vox Continentals were in every other garage bands set-up!

I really have met a number of "kids" (not 5 year olds, but 20 somethings on up) since the late '80s who really did draw the line at the 1st GD lp, they accepted that as part of the rockin' garage punk roots bands, and it took a long time and the right tapes to open their ears to anything else by the Dead,
I only speak from personal experience, realizing this can't be true for every one everywhere...

a lot of what I write in this vein is said with a bit of self-effacement, not to be taken as absolute final word, no siree!

I meself like a lot of later GD, as well as the raw primitive cheezy stuff from '65-'66!

it's all good indeed!

Hey speaking or early punk, I saw something missing off that list you linked - surf music. I have this CD - revenge of the surf instrumentals. If that isn't pre-garage grunge punk I don't know what is. I was glad to see the Kinks make that list though.
